If you ask me what my favourite meal in Goa is, my answer will always be a good FISH THALI!
Over the years, I've eaten my way across Goa, trying everything from tiny roadside eateries to some of the state's most popular seafood restaurants. While I've discovered plenty of great places along the way, there are only a handful I find myself returning to again and again.
So if you were visiting Goa and asked me to take you to my favourite fish thali spots, these are the five places that would make it to the list.
Whether you're looking for authentic Goan fish curry rice, fresh seafood, or a local gem off the tourist trail, this list is a great place to start.
1. Gayatri Restaurant, Tambdi Surla - North Goa
If you're planning to visit the beautiful Shri Mahadev temple at Tambdi Surla, don't make the mistake of driving back without stopping at Gayatri Restaurant. The drive through the lush greenery is beautiful, and by the time you reach the restaurant, you'll probably have worked up quite an appetite and thankfully, Gayatri never disappoints.
Everything here tastes incredibly fresh, the portions are generous, and the prices are surprisingly affordable considering the quality of the seafood they serve.
Of course, the fish thali is a must order. It's a simple, no frills meal served with rice, fish curry, salad and a huge fillet of freshly fried fish that lets the quality of the seafood do all the talking. But I honestly think you'd be missing out if you stopped there. Don't skip their Chonak Rava Fry and Prawns Rava Fry, both incredibly fresh and packed with flavour. And if you're dining with a group, make sure to order the Goan Chicken Xacuti with chapati. Rich, aromatic and full of authentic Goan flavours, it's easily one of my favourite non seafood dishes on the menu.
Everything tastes like it's been cooked in a Goan home, which is exactly what makes this one of those places you'll want to return to every time you're nearby.

2. Surya Bar and Restaurant, Nerul - North Goa
Hidden beneath the Nerul bridge on your way towards Candolim, this is one of those local restaurants people usually hear about through word of mouth.
And once you eat here, you'll understand why.
The concept itself is brilliant. Their rice plate starts at just ₹100/- and includes fish curry, rice, vegetable, papad, pickle, salad, and a fish cutlet.
Here's where it gets interesting. Instead of a fixed piece of fish with your meal, you get to choose your seafood from fresh kingfish, chonak, prawns, squid, mussels, clams, or crabs and have it cooked in any one of their seven different preparation styles. That means everyone at the table can order different seafood and share it around. And personally, I think this makes for a much more exciting meal than a regular fish thali, where everyone ends up eating exactly the same thing.
Especially if you're visiting with family or friends, this place is an absolute winner.
3. Kokum Curry, Panjim - North Goa
Ask anyone for a restaurant recommendation for the best fish thali in Panjim and Kokum Curry is almost guaranteed to come up.
And there's a reason for that. While their regular fish thali is a wholesome spread that typically includes rice, chapati, fish curry, a fried fish of the day, prawn curry, seasonal vegetables, kismoor, pickle, salad, sol kadi and a traditional Goan dessert, making it a complete meal that showcases the depth of Goan flavours. And their special thali often includes additional seafood dishes like crab or mussels preparations depending on availability.
But this isn't just another seafood restaurant. It's one of those places where the founder's are putting consistent efforts into preserving traditional Goan recipes that many restaurants no longer serve and you will end up discovering dishes you've probably never heard of before.
Along with the fish thali, don't miss out on :
- Chicken Xacuti
- Bharilé Bangddé (stuffed mackerel)
- Sungtache Lonche (prawn pickle)
- Mutton Suké with Wadé
- Traditional desserts like Manganné and Sakharbhaat
So if you want to explore some authentic lesser Goan food alongside a banging fish thali, Kokum Curry surely deserves a place on your itinerary.
4. Sawant Restaurant, Verna - South Goa
Some of the best food in Goa comes from the smallest restaurants and Sawant Restaurant is proof of that.
This tiny lunch spot in Verna doesn't rely on fancy interiors or elaborate menus. Instead, it focuses on doing one thing exceptionally well : serving fresh, delicious fish thalis.
The restaurant reportedly serves close to 200 fish thalis every single afternoon, making it one of the busiest local lunch spots in the area. It's especially popular with office-goers, so expect a crowd during peak lunch hours.
If you're planning a visit, get there before 1 pm and once they sell out, that's it for the day.
Simple food, fresh seafood, and flavours that remind you of a home-cooked Goan meal and sometimes that's all you really need.

5. Seamen's Nest, Assolna - South Goa
If you're looking for a relaxed seafood lunch with a view in South Goa, Seamen's Nest is hard to beat.
Located right on the banks of the River Sal in Assolna, this is one of my favourite places to slow down over a long meal.
Unlike a traditional fish thali, here you build your own plate. Start with a portion of rice and their delicious fish curry, then head to the seafood menu and order whatever catches your eye. The menu is elaborate from kingfish, prawns, squid, crab, clams, and plenty of other local seafood.
It's a completely different experience from ordering a standard thali and that's exactly what makes it special. Come for the seafood and you'll end up staying for the peaceful riverside views.

Which Fish Thali Spot in Goa Should You Visit First?
Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of these. Each restaurant offers a completely different experience from the scenic drive to Tambdi Surla, the customisable seafood feast at Surya, the heritage recipes at Kokum Curry, the no-frills local charm of Sawant, or the riverside setting at Seamen's Nest.
If you're planning a fish thali trail across Goa, I'd happily recommend every single one.
One last thing. If this blog helped you, send me the link to this article on Instagram, or just drop me a DM saying "Fish Thali Map." I'll personally share the Google Maps links to all of these restaurants so you can save them and explore them without the hassle of searching. Happy eating!
